Have you ever experienced being so immersed in a creative activity that you’ve lost track of time? This happens because creative activities such as art making, crafting, and gardening ease us into a state of mindfulness by enhancing our capacity for focus, concentration, inner peace, and calm. Regularly spending time in a mindful state has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, help us sleep better and promote a general sense of wellbeing. Alas, despite our best intentions, many of us struggle to prioritize time for our own self-care.
This program, comprised of four 1-hour Zoom sessions, explores the benefits of Creative Mindfulness, and offers tips and activities to help participants make it a regular self-care habit.
During each of the four Zoom sessions, we’ll work on an activity together and there will be variations for participants to work on at home in the accompanying newsletter. The sessions are as follows:
Session 1: Circles & Scribbles: Meditative Drawings
Session 2: Relaxing with Watercolors (a simple set of watercolors and watercolor paper is needed for this session)
Session 3: Slow Art Miniatures
Session 4: Collage: Bringing it all Together
Whether you are new to Creative Mindfulness or would like a refresher and some ideas to keep your practice going at home, this workshop is for you!
Open to clients and caregivers. Free Program with optional donations. Participants need not attend every session. No ‘art experience’ is required. All classes will be on zoom.
Participants will need to provide their own, simple supplies to do the activities:
- A Sharpie (or similar) permanent, ultra fine point marker
- Some sort of coloring tool: Markers, colored pencils, or a simple watercolor set such as the 8 or 16-color set by Prang available where most art supplies are sold
- Assorted paper such as printer paper, drawing paper and/or inexpensive watercolor paper
- Glue stick, scissors, pencil, and ruler
About the Facilitator: A metastatic cancer survivor since 2011, Karen Arsenault has found the creative process invaluable in navigating the fear and uncertainty of the cancer journey. Through the many expressive arts workshops she has participated in, Karen developed a passion for watercolors and now gives back by developing and facilitating her own Creative Mindfulness workshops and donating her art in several forms to The Healing Garden.
